Work Fatigue

For most, work plays a major part of our lives. It can have a big impact on how we feel - in and outside of work. Work is something we do to make a living. And for many who pursue their careers or calling, it can lead to greater life fulfillment. This can be done through being challenged, past achievements, recognition, connecting with others and making a difference. There are a lot of benefits to having a vocation, but at times, we can get overloaded, tired, or burnt out. Sometimes, we are in the wrong career or started a business that doesn’t fit how we want to live. Here are 3 signs you are experiencing work fatigue and how to overcome it:

Challenge #1:
You have been overloaded at work for more than six months and there is no end in sight.

How to tackle it:
Talk to your boss about your need to have a more manageable workload. They can delegate some of your tasks to another employee and/or understand that you are not available to take on new projects. If necessary, they can hire an addition to the team. It is important to have boundaries at work, even as an employee. While it may be okay to feel stretched for a short period of time, it is not sustainable long term. If your boss does not listen and make adequate changes to accommodate you, you may want to look for a new job. If you're your boss, you need to look at ways to streamline your business or expand your business by bringing on new employees, or hire subcontractors if there is too much work for you to do yourself.

Challenge #2:
You no longer like what you do, your work feels draining and you’re having a hard time getting motivated to complete your tasks.

How to tackle it:
You are likely burnt out and need to take a break from your career or change careers all together. It may help to go on vacation and reassess your work situation and what you want to be doing. If you return to your job after vacation, you may feel a sense of renewal. If you don’t, it may be that you have outgrown your career or don't feel connected to the work you're doing. Working with a Life and Career Coach can help you figure out your next move.

Challenge #3:
You’re so busy at work that you don't have time to set up systems and processes to make your work more efficient and effective, ensuring that you are able to handle more work with ease in the long term.

How to tackle it:
If you're an employee, you can talk to your boss to take some things off your plate so you can allocate some of your time to setting up a workflow that allows you to accomplish more in the future. If you’re the boss, delegate or outsource some of your tasks and reset your priorities. This will ensure that you are able to streamline and integrate systems that will save you time in the long run and allow you to expand your business effectively.

These are just a few of the scenarios we may find ourselves in when we are experiencing work fatigue. Unfortunately, it is pretty common to experience these challenges at some point in our careers. Sometimes, we just need to alter our mindset and thought processes, and other times, we need to change companies or careers. Each situation is unique and dependent on so many variables. Thus, each approach may differ. A Life & Career Coach or Life & Business Coach can help you determine the best path forward to overcome your career challenges.
