8 Ways To Decide On Your Next Career Move
We all go through a process to decide what's best for our career and what our next move will be. Over the years, I have made some big career moves that led me to where I am today. From working in supply chain operations to project management in the engineering and construction industry, then to starting my own business as a Life Coach.
For me, my most recent big career change as a Life Coach came to me through my intuition when I had an 'aha moment' when I was on a much-needed trip and taking a break from my everyday life. After that initial idea came through, I did endless research about becoming a Life Coach and also took a long hard look at my transferable skills, abilities and interests. As part of my process to determine if Life Coaching was the right fit for me, I completed a lot of the exercises I am going to share with you. Answering these questions gave me the clarity that I was heading in the right direction.
Here are my top 8 ways to decide on your next career move:
Write out 10-20 things you are good at and what you like to do (include hard skills, soft skills and talents). It helps to understand your strengths and what you enjoy doing.
Write out 10-20 things you are not good at and what you don't like doing. Having a clear idea of what you want to avoid or limit your time doing brings clarity.
Write out attributes of what you value and appreciate in your work. This will help to draw on your past work experience and you can visualize what you will value and appreciate in your future work.
Write out the core desired feelings you want to have while performing your work. How do you want to feel?
List what you were good at as a kid and enjoyed doing.
Complete some online personality assessments, such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).
Close your eyes, focus on your breath and when your mind is calm and quiet; ask yourself, How can I maximize my impact? What is my career calling? Visualize and listen to what arises.
Brainstorm your top 3 career choices that are a good match with your talents, skills and abilities. Do some research and make a pros and cons list to narrow the list down.
Once you get a clear focus on your next career move, you will want to research and ensure you have the required skills and abilities for this path (hint: check job postings). If you don't have these skills, can you acquire them? Check the compensation for your next career choice and make sure this move aligns with how you want to live.
Those are my top 8 ways to decide on your next career move. If you think you're ready to make your next career move and decide your ideal life, send me a message to inquire about private 1-on-1 coaching.
Farewell, I look forward to hearing from you.
