What Business Should I Start?

We all go through our own process of how we came up with that brilliant business idea. For me, it came to me through my intuition when I had an aha moment on a trip in Hawaii and taking a break from my everyday life. After that initial idea came through, I did a lot of research about my business idea and also took a long hard look at my transferable skills, abilities and interests. As part of my process to determine if Life Coaching was the right fit for me, I completed a lot of the exercises I am going to share with you and it helped give me clarity that I was heading in the right direction.

Here are my top 8 ways to decide what business to start:

  1. What You Are Good At: Write out about 10-20 things for what you're good at and what you like (include hard skills, soft skills and talents). It really helps to understand your strengths and what you enjoy doing.

  2. What Your Are Bad At: Write out about 10-20 things for what you’re not good at and what you don't like. Having a clear idea of what you want to avoid or limit your time doing brings clarity.

  3. Values: Write out attributes of what you value and appreciate in your work. It can help to draw on your past work experience or you can imagine what you may value and appreciate in your future work.

  4. Address Your Feelings: Write out the core desired feelings you want to have while performing your work. How do you want to feel?

  5. Natural Abilities: List what you were good at as a kid and enjoyed doing.

  6. Assessments: Complete some online personality assessments, such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).

  7. Meaningful Work: Close your eyes, focus on your breath and when your mind is calm and quiet; ask yourself, what product or service can I contribute to others? Listen and see what comes up.

  8. Research: Brainstorm your top 3 business ideas that are a good match with your talents, skills and abilities. Do some research and make a pros and cons list to narrow the list down.

Once you gain clarity on the type of business that is a good personal fit for you to start, you will want to do market research to make sure you have a viable business idea.

Those are my top 8 ways to decide what business to start. If you think you're ready to escape the corporate world and design your ideal life, send me a message to inquire about private 1 on 1 coaching or take my entrepreneur quiz to find out.
