How to Make Big Life Decisions

We make so many small decisions every day but when it comes to making the big life decisions a lot of people put off making a decision or feel indecisive or unsure they made the right choice. It can help to have some decision-making tools at your disposal and to go through a decision-making process to get the best results and ultimately be happy with your decision. As a Life Coach and Entrepreneur Coach, I am well armed with decision-making tools that really help both myself and my clients. Here are a few helpful tips:

Pros & Cons List

One of the most common methods to make big life decisions is to create a pros and cons list. If you have 2 or 3 options to choose from, you can create a pros and cons list for each option. Some people like to type their pros and cons list but I find the most effective way is to write them down on paper or on a whiteboard. Writing these lists helps you to feel more into the decision and helps you recall the list better. Once you have made your lists for each option of any major decision you can compare the lists. Be sure to take note that some pros and cons hold more weight and are more important to you than others. A pros and cons list is just one way to make a big decision and you can combine it with other methods to gain clarity on what you want most and what's most important to you.

Holographic Perspective

Another method is to make a decision by thinking about the situation and a choice to be made from a holographic perspective by using your logic, intuition and emotional awareness. Looking at the situation using a holographic perspective will give you a more complete picture of what you think, how you feel and what your inner guidance is telling you. A Life Coach is great at asking the right questions to draw out your thoughts and feelings. You can work on doing this yourself by asking yourself questions, like

“What makes the most sense?”
“How do I feel about this choice?“

I also work with my clients to get in touch with their intuitive mind. There are different techniques to get more in touch with your intuition including spending 5 minutes in meditation to quiet the mind and then ask yourself, how do you feel about a certain option or choice? Then see what answers arise for you. Another technique is to go on a walk alone and ask yourself a question you want to answer as part of your decision-making process and then after your walk write in your journal to see what unfolds.

Meta-Plan

You can also create a Meta-Plan to carry out any decision and consider all aspects of the plan. Through this process, you can consider how your decision affects you and the people in your life. You can look at the short, mid and long term effects of carrying forward your plan based on the choices or a decision you have made.

Need Help?

There are many decision techniques to use when making a big life choice. The tools mentioned above are a great starting point to help you make the decisions weighing you down. Working with a Life Coach can help you dig deep to understand what you truly want and how to move forward. Once you make a decision, you want to create a plan to implement the decision and reflect how your decision make process felt as well as how things turned out.

It always helps to have a sounding board to walk you through the process. A Life Coach will help you review all your options from all angles and come to a viable decision.
